Can I Get an HR Licence Straight From a Car Licence in Queensland?

Yes. In Queensland, you can progress directly from a Class C car licence to a Class HR (Heavy Rigid) licence without first obtaining an LR or MR licence. However, you need to meet Queensland's minimum licence-experience requirements and complete the required testing.

1. You Need to Have Held a Class C Licence for 2 Years

To move directly from a car licence to an HR licence, you generally need to have held a Class C provisional, probationary or open licence for at least 2 years. The required experience must fall within the previous 5 years.

2. You Don't Have to Get an LR or MR Licence First

You do not have to progress through LR or MR before applying for HR. Queensland allows a qualifying Class C licence holder to move directly to HR after meeting the two-year experience requirement.

Alternatively, if you already hold an LR or MR licence, you can progress to HR after holding either class for at least 1 year.

3. You Still Need to Complete the HR Licence Requirements

Having enough car-driving experience doesn't automatically give you an HR licence. You must meet the applicable Queensland requirements, including the required heavy-vehicle knowledge/testing requirements and pass the HR practical driving test.

4. Your Car Licence Experience Must Meet Queensland's Rules

The two-year requirement isn't simply based on how long you've owned a licence. Queensland specifies how licence experience is counted. 5. You Can Start HR Training Once You're Eligible
